In my previous work I have participated in various projects concerning sustainability, responsibility, and regeneration in tourism.
I have managed the Nordic Regenerative Tourism Project on behalf of The Icelandic Tourism Cluster since 2022.

RAKEL EVA SÆVARSDÓTTIR
SUSTAINABILITY CONSULTANT

Rakel has a diverse experience in the field of sustainability. Within the travel industry, she held the role of sustainability director at PLAY, where she built the company’s first sustainability strategy along with measurable and timed key performance indicators. Further she Introduced a pioneering solution to the market, enabling passengers to offset their flights using certified and registered carbon credits.

Rakel played an important role in the establishment of Deloitte’s sustainability consulting services in Iceland in 2019. Most recently, she occupied the role of Sustainability Director at Aspiration, a US based enterprise specializing in investing in carbon projects and offering advice to companies, mainly in Europe, on net zero strategy and investments in high-quality carbon projects.

She occupies board positions for three organisations, Alor, a startup dedicated to supporting the energy transition through the implementation of battery energy storage solutions.; Festa Center for Sustainability, a NGO focusing on fostering sustainability bridge building in Iceland; and serves as a board of director at Laufið, a software solution designed to empower SMEs on their sustainable data collection and disclosure.

Rakel hefur fjölbreytta reynslu á sviði sjálfbærni. Innan ferðaþjónustunnar starfaði hún sem Sjálfbærnistjóri PLAY flugfélags þar sem hún smíðaði fyrstu sjálfbærnistefnu félagsins ásamt mælanlegum og tímasettum lykilmælikvarðum. Einnig þróaði hún fyrstu lausnina á markaðnum sem býður farþegum að kolefnisjafna flugið sitt með vottuðum og skráðum kolefniseiningum.Rakel kom að uppbyggingu á sjálfbærniráðgjöf Deloitte á Íslandi og hóf þá vegferð félagsins árið 2019.

Síðustu tæp tvö ár hefur hún starfað á alþjóðavettvangi með áherslu á kolefnismarkaðinn og ráðgjöf til fyrirtækja um kolefnishlutleysiog fjárfestingu í kolefnis verkefnum.Rakel situr í stjórn Alor, nýsköpunarfyrirtæki á sviði orkuframleiðslu og – geymslu, Festu Miðstöð um sjálfbærni auk þess er hún stjórnarformaður Laufsins, stafræn lausn sem auðveldar íslenskum fyrirtækjum gagnasöfnun og miðlun á sjálfbærnitengdum mælikvörðum.

HJÖRTUR SMÁRASON
SPECIALIST IN STORYTELLING AND INNOVATION

Hjörtur Smárason is the founder and lead strategist at Saltworks and partner at Chameleon Strategies. He is the former CEO of Visit Greenland where he lead the development of adventure travel and sustainable tourism in one of the most remote and challenging destinations in the World. Hjörtur has been an advisor for companies, cities, regions and entire countries on their tourism development, innovation, sustainability and communication strategies. Among recent projects are a new strategi for NW Iceland, a strategy for market implementation of sustainable aviation fuel for Neste, the largest producer of SAF in the World, and he is currently a strategic advisor for the government of Ukraine of tourism recovery after the War. Hjörtur has also taught at the tourism department of Holar University.

Hjörtur has a comprehensive knowledge of sustainability and regenerative tourism and has given talks and ran workshops for destinations and companies around the World. This includes recent sustainability conferences in Barcelona, London, Valencia and the Responsible Tourism Awards in India 2024, and a workshop for sustainability leaders in the travel industry at the Adventure Travel World Summit in Sapporo in Japan. 

 Hjörtur’s specialty is innovation and storytelling. He has a strategic mind and takes a holistic approach to every task. Hjörtur has an excellent global network within the industry.

Hjörtur Smárason rekur ráðgjafafyrirtækið Saltworks ehf. og er partner í Chameleon Strategies. Hann er fyrrum ferðamálastjóri Grænlands og leiddi þróun Grænlands sem áfangastaðar með áherslu á sjálfbærni og ævintýraferðammensku. Hjörtur hefur starfað um árabil sem ráðgjafi fyrir áfangastaði og fyrirtæki um þróun ferðaþjónustu, nýsköpun, sjálfbærni og vöruþróun. Meðal nýlegra verkefna eru ný stefnumótun í ferðaþjónustu fyrir Norðurland vestra; Strategía um innleiðingu sjálfbærs þotueldsneytis í ferðaþjónustunni fyrir olíufyrirtækið Neste sem er stærsti framleiðandi heims á SAF (sustainable aviation fuel) og ráðgjafi úkraínsku ríkisstjórnarinnar um endurreisn ferðaþjónustunnar í landinu eftir stríð. Hjörtur er einnig fyrrum kennari við ferðmáladeild Háskólans á Hólum.

Hjörtur hefur góða þekkingu á sjálfbærni og nærandi ferðaþjónustu og hefur haldið fyrirlestra og vinnustofur fyrir áfangastaði og fyrirtæki víða um heim. Má þar nefna nýlega fyrirlestra á sjálfbærniráðstefnum í London, Barcelona, Valencia og sjálfbærniverðlaunum indversku ferðaþjónustunnar í Nýju Delhi 2024, og vinnustofu fyrir “Sustainability Leaders” á Adventure Travel World Summit í Sapporo í Japan. Sérsvið Hjartar er í vöruþróun og sagnalist. Hann er strategískur og með heildarsýn á hlutina. Hjörtur hefur mjög gott tengslanet, ekki síst erlendis.
